Laketran estimates that the transit center serves 65,000 commuters annually between the local fixed route, Park-n-Ride, and campus loop services.
We provided project management and design services to create a central hub for Laketran, improve access to higher education, and prepare for Ohio’s first battery-operated electric bus fleet.
The new $2.5 million transit center is on a 1.5-acre site that features a bus-only entrance off Clocktower Drive, separate drive lanes for transit buses and campus shuttle buses, lighted parking spaces for buses to queue between routes, parking spaces for park-and-ride customers, and lighted pedestrian crosswalks.
The 2,200 sq ft transit center was funded through a mix of federal and state capital transit grants, including NOACA’s Transportation for Livable Communities Initiative implementation grant, and a $1.5 million grant received by the Ohio Department of Transportation’s Ohio Transit Partnership Program.
The building includes:
- A climate-controlled waiting area.
- Public restrooms.
- A large double-sided canopy for weather protection.
- Public Wi-Fi access.
- Security surveillance
- LED display/message monitors for bus schedules and other relevant information.
A unique and key component of this project was coordinating with Proterra, Laketran’s electric bus provider, who installed state-of-the-art integrated rapid charging equipment for the new fleet of fully electric buses.
